Details of the Canon EOS 1D X were officially announced today, and from the initial features and specs sheets the Canon EOS 1D X already looks like most photographers dream have all come true at once.
With the entry into the market of the Canon EOS 1D X this body will take over the role as Canons Flagship full frame DSLR camera.
Let’s look at a summary of the major features of this dream DSLR:
18.1Mp Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
Rather than up the mega-pixels Canon have decided to play with the trade off and provide better ISO quality and low light performance, this was achieved via a total re-design of the CMOS censor, that has produced a much better signal to noise ratio (S/N) producing this better ISO performance.
Canon clams the Canon 1D X to have the best high ISO with low noise of any DSLR on the market, and we are betting they are right, we hope to confirm this soon!
High Speed Continuous Shooting
Canon says the Canon EOS-1D X is capable of firing off full resolution RAW +JPEG images at 12 Frames per Second, and if the photographer wants to shoot only JPEG images this rate goes up to 14 FPS. Canon say the combination of the 16 channel CMOS sensor data read out as well as the Dual DIGIC 5+ Image processors make this extremely high continuous shooting rate possible.
Expanded ISO Range 100-51500
The Canon EOS-1D X offers will hit the shop floors with a standard ISO range of 100-51200 and an expanded ISO range that includes ISO 50 L, ISO 102400 H1 and 204800 H2
Dual DIGIC 5+ Image Processors for Enhanced Noise Reduction and Blazing Processing Speed
With Dual DIGIC 5+ Image processors the Canon EOS-1D X has an amazingly high shutter speed of between 12-14 FPS added to this high quality low noise shots can be taken at higher than normal ISO which is a bonus for low light and night photographers.
Dual CF Card Slots
For those assignments when every second counts, the Canon EOS-1D X provides dual CF card slots, and allows the photographer to change CF cards while shooting.
61-Point High Density Reticular Auto Focus
A 61 Point High Density Reticular Auto system provides much greater accuracy than ever before, and offers:
multi-zone wide-area AF for better tracking
5 central dual cross-type points (f/2.8 diagonal)
21 central cross-type points (f/5.6 horizontal and vertical)
20 outer cross-type points (f/4.0 horizontal)
In addition to this AF can be controlled via a dedicated Auto Focus Menu item.
EOS HD Video Recording
As with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II it looks like the EOS-1D X will be popular will videographers with the ability to capture HD Video, the feature which we were most impressed with was continuous video shooting ability that effectively negates the 4Gb FAT file limit by allowing video to be captured but splitting the files at 4Gb rather than shop shooting at the 4Gb mark as what is the case with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II.
Sound recording on video has been greatly improved with a built in sound recording level meter as well as 64 step volume control.
3.2″ TFT LCD Monitor
The TFT LCD screen on the Canon EOS-1D X measures 3.2 inch or 8.12 cm that has 1,040,000 dots and has an anti-reflective coating, the screen has the ability to zoom in up to 10x
Optional Canon Wireless File Transmitter and GPS
The Canon EOS-1D X is compatible with Canons new Wireless transmitter WFT-E6A and GPS Receiver GP-E1. Canon says the wireless transmitter is up to 2.5 faster than the previous model and provides greater range, the GPS receiver has its own power supply and is able to record location data which includes latitude, longitude and elevation, in addition to this it features an electronic compass that records the cameras orientation while shooting.
The Canon EOS-1D X will hit the camera stores both online and offline with an RRP of US $6,800
